What Filipino importers actually ask on Reddit — answered

Reddit is where Filipino importers ask the questions they will not ask a forwarder’s sales rep. We read those threads. The same six questions come up constantly, and the answers there are a mix of genuinely good advice and confident nonsense. Here is our attempt at the honest version.

1. “Is [forwarder] legit? Anyone used them?”

The single most common post, and the right instinct. Reddit is genuinely useful for this because posts are hard to delete and nobody is moderating the answers in the company’s favour — unlike a Facebook page, where negative reviews quietly disappear. Search the name plus “scam” on Google, Facebook and Reddit before you pay anyone. 2. “Magkano ba talaga ang puhunan?”

The answers range from ₱5,000 to ₱500,000, which tells you the question is underspecified. Realistically ₱20,000–₱50,000 gets you a genuine first order: a sample by air, a small bulk order, all-in shipping, and a buffer. The buffer is the part everyone skips. 3. “Bakit na-hold sa customs?”

Usually one of four things, in order of frequency: undervalued or vague declaration, missing permits for a regulated item, a random inspection, or a discrepancy between the packing list and what is in the box. 4. “Alibaba, 1688 or Taobao?”

Reddit consensus — start on Alibaba, graduate to 1688 — is broadly right. Alibaba is English with buyer protection and higher prices; 1688 is 30–50% cheaper, Chinese-only, domestic shipping only; Taobao is retail. The comparison in full: which platform should you use.

5. “Do I need to register as an importer?”

6. “Is the ₱10,000 tax-free thing real?”

The pattern in all of it: the people who get burned are not the ones who asked too many questions. They are the ones who asked none, because the price was good and the rep was friendly.
