Fake Alibaba suppliers: the red flags that give them away

Supplier scams do not look like scams. They look like the cheapest quote with the friendliest sales rep and the fastest replies. Here is how the common ones actually work — and the checks that catch them before your deposit leaves the country.

The price that does the recruiting

Every supplier scam starts the same way: a price 30–40% below everyone else's. The listing exists to be found by people sorting by price. Real factories know what materials cost; a price that ignores the cost of materials is not a bargain, it is bait. Get five quotes and be suspicious of the outlier, not grateful for it.

The move off the platform

The scam needs you off Alibaba, because Trade Assurance makes stealing your money inconvenient. So the rep offers a "discount for direct payment," or claims the company account is "under maintenance," or sends an invoice with a personal beneficiary name. The moment payment moves off-platform, your protection is gone and so, often, is the supplier. This is the single brightest red flag in the entire process.

The identity that does not add up

Legit-check the company, not the storefront. Ask for the registered Chinese company name and business licence — real suppliers send it without drama. Cross-check the name on Google and on Reddit: importers in r/phinvest and Facebook importing groups post supplier experiences, good and bad, and a scammer's name usually surfaces within a page of results. No history at all is its own warning — scam operations rotate to fresh names for a reason. It is the same method we laid out for vetting forwarders in our legit-check guide, and it works on anyone you are about to wire money to.

The sample that never becomes the bulk order

A subtler version: the sample is excellent, the bulk shipment is garbage. Protect yourself by putting the specification in the Trade Assurance order — material, weight, dimensions, packaging — so a quality dispute has something to point at. Order samples by air from at least two suppliers, and on your first bulk order, keep it small enough to survive losing.

The video call that settles it

Ask for a live video call from the factory floor. Not a tour video — live, today, showing your product being made. Traders posing as factories and renters of other people's showrooms fail this test constantly. A real manufacturer finds this request completely normal.

Before any deposit: five quotes, distrust the cheapest · payment stays on-platform · business licence requested and cross-checked on Google and Reddit · spec written into the order · live video from the floor · first order sized to survive.
