How to order from Alibaba to the Philippines

Alibaba is where most Filipino importers start, because it is in English and suppliers expect international buyers. It is also where most first-order mistakes happen. Here is the whole process, including the checks that prevent the expensive ones.

Alibaba, 1688 or Taobao?

Quick orientation: Alibaba is the international wholesale platform — English interface, suppliers used to exporting, higher prices. 1688 is the domestic Chinese version — 30–50% cheaper but Chinese-only and domestic shipping only. Taobao is retail. If this is your first import, start on Alibaba: the safety rails are better, and you can graduate to 1688 once you have a forwarder and some experience.

Step 1 — Find suppliers, then legit-check them

Search your product, then filter for Verified Supplier and Trade Assurance. Look at years on the platform, transaction volume, and response rate. Then do what most buyers skip: run the supplier's company name through Google and Reddit. Importers post supplier experiences in communities like r/phinvest and in Facebook importing groups, and a five-minute legit check there has saved people five-figure deposits. Step 2 — Talk before you pay

Message three to five suppliers, not one. Ask for the exact specification in writing: material, dimensions, weight per unit, packaging, and production time. A good supplier answers precisely. A supplier who answers every question with "yes yes can do" is telling you they are not reading your questions.

MOQs (minimum order quantities) are negotiable more often than listed — especially if you frame the first order as a trial with reorders to follow.

Step 3 — Order samples by air first

Never place a bulk order on photos. Have samples sent to our air freight warehouse — they arrive in the Philippines in about 5–7 days from our China warehouse. The sample tells you the true quality, the true weight and packaging (which sets your shipping cost), and whether the supplier ships what they photograph.

Step 4 — Pay inside the platform

Use Trade Assurance and pay through Alibaba. The moment a supplier asks you to pay outside the platform — direct bank transfer, crypto, a "company account" that is a personal name — your buyer protection disappears. That request is the single most common setup in Alibaba scams. Step 5 — Ship to the forwarder's warehouse, not your house

Alibaba suppliers will offer to quote you "door to door" shipping. It is almost always the expensive way, and customs surprises land on you. The standard route: get your client code from your forwarder, give your supplier the China warehouse address with that code on every carton, and let the forwarder consolidate, ship and clear customs on an all-in rate. Two things worth reading before your goods ship: the prohibited items list (suppliers will happily sell you things that cannot enter the Philippines) and Form E, the certificate that can cut your duty to zero — you must ask for it before shipment, not after.
