Three ways to ship from Vietnam
1. Sea freight, per cubic metre (CBM)
For cartons, furniture and anything bulky. You're billed on the space your cargo takes up, and the rate per CBM drops as your volume goes up. The brackets are below 1 CBM, 1–5 CBM, 5–10 CBM and 10 CBM and above, so consolidating orders into one bigger shipment lowers the rate on every cubic metre.
2. Sea freight for small packages, per kilo (1–30 kg)
For samples, test orders and small restocks that don't justify per-CBM pricing. It's billed by weight, and the per-kilo rate gets lower in steps up to 30 kg. Above 30 kg, a shipment moves to per-CBM pricing.
3. Air freight, per kilo
The fastest option, billed per kilogram. It's worth it for urgent samples, restocking a bestseller, or goods whose value dwarfs the freight cost.
Which option fits your cargo
- Under about 30 kg and not urgent: small-package sea. Usually the cheapest way to move samples.
- Bulky or larger volumes: per-CBM sea freight, and the more you consolidate, the better the rate.
- Urgent, light and valuable: air.
A quick rule of thumb: cargo that is light for its size (cushions, garments, rattan) usually works out cheaper per kilo while it's under 30 kg. Once it's heavier or larger, per-CBM wins. Not sure how CBM is measured? See what is CBM.
Vietnam vs China: an honest comparison
Freight from Vietnam costs more per cubic metre than freight from China, and we'd rather you know that before choosing a supplier than find out at billing. So Vietnam makes sense when what you're buying is the reason:
- The product is better, or only available, in Vietnam: specialty coffee, rattan and handcrafted furniture, certain garments and footwear.
- The goods are high-value for their size, so freight is a small share of landed cost.
- You want a second supply base so you don't depend on one country.
