Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City: Which Vietnam Warehouse to Use

Angkat has two warehouses in Vietnam, one in Hanoi and one in Ho Chi Minh City, and both ship to Metro Manila by sea and air. The rates are the same from either. What decides which one you use is simple: where your supplier is.

The short answer

• Supplier in the north (Hanoi and the surrounding provinces): use the Hanoi warehouse.
• Supplier in the south (Ho Chi Minh City, Binh Duong, Dong Nai and the Mekong Delta): use the Ho Chi Minh City warehouse.
• Supplier in central Vietnam (Da Nang, Hue, Quang Nam): ask your supplier which city they can deliver to more cheaply and quickly, then use that one.

Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City are more than 1,500Vietnam is about 1,600 km from north to south.nbsp;km apart by road. Sending goods the length of the country to the "wrong" warehouse adds domestic trucking cost and several days before your cargo even leaves Vietnam.

What the north is good for: Hanoi

• Handicrafts, rattan and bamboo from the craft villages around the capital.
• Ceramics, most famously from Bat Trang, on the edge of Hanoi.
• Textiles and fabric from the northern wholesale markets.

What the south is good for: Ho Chi Minh City

• Furniture and wood products from the Binh Duong and Dong Nai manufacturing belt. See importing furniture and rattan from Vietnam.
• Garments, footwear and bags from Ho Chi Minh City's large wholesale markets and factories.

• General consumer goods: the south is Vietnam's biggest commercial centre, so this is the default for most mixed orders.

Buying from suppliers in both regions

If you buy from a Hanoi ceramics workshop and a Binh Duong furniture factory, you have two choices:

1. Use both warehouses and receive two shipments. It's simplest and there's no long domestic haul, but you manage two consignments.
2. Consolidate at one warehouse by having the smaller supplier truck its goods across the country. That makes sense only if the domestic trucking is cheap relative to the value of having one shipment.

Pricing is the same from either warehouse

Setting it up with your supplier

1. Create your free account at app.angkatph.com. Vietnam is already enabled, and you'll see both warehouse addresses.
2. Send the right address. Give your supplier the warehouse address for their region, in writing, with your client code.
3. Put the code on every carton. The warehouse can't accept boxes without one.
4. Agree export packing, especially for furniture, ceramics and anything fragile.

Common mistakes

• Letting the supplier choose the "nearest port" instead of the warehouse address you gave them. Be explicit.
• Missing client codes. It's the single most common cause of delays.
• Assuming Vietnam is always cheaper than China. The goods may be, but freight costs more per CBM. Compare landed cost with our landed-cost guide.
